I read widely and in most genres but romance and westerns. Here you'll find my reviews since 2007, with a few reviews of previously read books as well.

In 2012, I completed an "authors of the world" challenge, reading a book for every country (and a few other entities) by someone who'd lived there for at least two years. I expect to tag these books by challenge and country in the near future. I'm still refining my list by adding books that better meet my challenge criteria.

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom - Cory Doctorow I enjoy Doctorow and find him easy to read. The early novels, of which this is the earliest, read like expanded short stories in that there is a basic premise that unfolds with extra detail but not extra complexity. This works in Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, which is about control in several manifestations. The most obvious is the focus of the plot--control over a future Disney World. Doctorow jumps right in and builds convincing worlds without excessive exposition, which is refreshing. The novel seems a little thin at times, perhaps because the narrator's interiority is less well drawn than the scenery and relationships. Still, an entertaining debut.
